You need intrinsic motivators, not extrinsic ones. Extrinsic motivators, like money or gold stars, are material things that make them feel good at first, but after a while they stop caring as much.
Intrinsic motivators are what keep people going as hard as they can. These are things like getting enjoyment out of what they do, or making progress toward a goal in life, etc. You can motivate students by making their studies interesting and challenging, and by encouraging them to think about the future and how education will help them acheive their goals in life.

Awards are a good motivator for good marks. But sometimes everyone should get an award of some kind. We like to be acknowledged for what we do especially in front of the others. It's starts off with stars or stickers in the early grades but it can't stop there. Something that can be hung up on the wall for everyone to see. This is good training. Competition is good. We need to be told how good we are. A person can do anything having confidence.
