the best way is to stay still and in the wind flow where the elephant won't be able to smell you

stand still and pray that he is not thinking himself to be cornered and and tell ur friends to make some noise so that he get distracted from you and dont do anything silly to make him angry like throwing peanuts or bannanas at him, he will not see the bannana or peanut but he wil surely see ur offensive posture which u will compose while throwing and dont listen to all these jokers in all probability they have never ever seen a live rat leave alone an elephant

See Friend, this situation, is very critical.In such a situation
you simply stand where you are.and fall on your legs(not on the elephant's!!!!!!) and try to pretend to be injured.The Elephant will sense your pains and ultimately leave you alone.

I'd play dead, but when it actually happens I don't think I'll be able to do it... you're cornered by an elephant! I don't know what I'll do...

I would try to stand very still - I would be worried how the elephant would react to me going to the bathroom in my pants.

1) give him some bananas or peanuts
2) pretend to have a heart attack
3) or stay calm just do nothing... the elephant won't care about u

don't run straight away from it...
you should run left, right, left, right, left, right until you get far away from the elephant, because elephant hard / difficult to run left, right, left, right as its body is too large for it to run that way.
this is really worked cause i answer this question according to my physics knowlegdes..
