The oldest most effective predator is the shark. Evolution got it right 1/2 a billion years ago, there practically perfect with no need to evolve further. However the most intelligent is most likely cephalapods. Being squid, octopus and cuttlefish. But there brains were evolved to avoid being eaten not to hunt with. However they can use to hunt as well. So overall the shark take the crown but the squid is the most evolved hunter. The jar example was a good one. That's why we can't figure out there intelligence. With a dolphins or a dog we can count how many sounds they make and see if it's used to communicate action. But with squid they use body language and color. Which is even more complex then our communication method. We are superior but in another billion years its not too far out there to say the squid might evolve as we did.

I actually saw a show on this last night... it's the an octopus. For instance, did you know that an octopus can open a screwed tight jar? Their beak allows them to crush crustaceous shells and can easily amputate a human finger or hand, depending on size. An octopus is defiantly one of the oldest predators as well, considering that it's an invertebrate.

Great example...
Did you know that the bluering octopus is extremely venomous, having been responsible for a number of human fatalities? It employs this venom to catch the crabs that it feeds on and also to discourage would-be predators.

Bet you never thought you'd have someone tell you it was an octopus, did you?
