I am setup for automatic updates but that never happens. If I try to do it myself I get an error number 0x80072EFD. Looking that up and following directions did not help.

You need a comprehensive set of options to troubleshoot your laptop. Google or Yahoo search 'windows update not working' and then find the windows update troubleshooter. Go to that site for a comprehensive overview. Also click on start/all programs/windowns update, and check to see that automatic updates is enabled. Run a spyware scan and a virus scan. Also, if you have a firewall like 'Zone Alarm' make sure that you gave it permission to contact with windows update at micro soft.

That error refers to your firewall software (Norton, McAfee, or ZoneAlarm) blocking the connection to the update site. you need to sift through the blocked programs in your firewall software and re-enable the windows update to use the internet.
