Most wireless router today serve almost same purpose to connect multiple PCs on hard cable and wifi. Some may have more secuirty features than the others and that usually come with a higher price tag. Things to note are the numbers of available RJ45 ethernet ports and the range coverage. Esitmate your farthest position of your laptop that you may possibly used (bathroom) and count the number of walls signal have to penerate at line of sight. Check out the specification of the wifi route and limitation to make sure both ends meet. Do not be too worry about all those .b or .g or super.g series it's bandwith limitation each can provide and normally those bandwidth far suffice your requirement. (e.g : a wireless g series would cap at 54mpbs) a speed that not possible in the near decade if you're only using a lap and a desk. Securing your network is the next thing you need to look into after getting the router. Yes it's true that your neighbors can piggy back on your wireless router if you're risk taker. Is NOT a rumor.

Basically its this...

1. Get a BELKIN Router ( a F5D7633-4 is recommended).

2. Set it up prior to the guidelines & Instructions. (The settings are different for each internet provider).

3. Go into the settings by typing 192.168.2.1 when you are connected to the network.

4. These are the security settings you can assign:

> Unprotected - This is probably the easy way of making a network, but if you live in an estate or live close to other houses which have wireless-enabled computers - then they could use YOUR wireless internet without permission.

> Protected (WEP or WPA), this means that you can set up your router to have a 13 or 5 digit code which has to be entered into all the computers in order for them to connect to your internet.

> DHCP Blocking or Client IP Filters, this means that you can specify computers on your network, or people that cannot connect to the internet. If the blocked people attempt to connect, their request will be denied and they will be blocked.

> MAC Address Filtering, (this is my personal favourite), this means that unless a computer is specified to be allowed to connect to the network, they will be otherwise blocked automatically from the network.

4. Enjoy Your Network.

I can connect to an Unsecure wireless connection. To set the security feature of the router refer to the user manual. Most routers give you access by entering its IP address into the internet explorer. There you can change the default name of the router and the security settings. The manual provides the default access password for your router. Most wireless routers walk you through the set up it is a matter of accessing the set up program. If you do not have the manual this information can be obtained through the website most likely. Set a pass key for the router something you can remember but also something that not easy for someone to guess. To answer your first question about the combatability of the wireless router and laptop you can connect the wireless router and turn on your laptop check the wireless connections and see if it list your router the usual default name for the router is "Default"
