I have at&t DSL and what to add a second computer. I would like it so we can both access the internet from different rooms in our home at the same time each acting independent from each other.

You will need:

1) Wireless Router
2) If your computers are laptops then you need two wireless PCMCIA network cards
3) If your computers are desktops then you need two wireless USB Network adapters
4) If your computers are a combination of laptop/desktop then 1 of eash wireless adapter

Thats all you need.......

I like to use D-Link myself, but you can make your own mind up between D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, Belkin and so many others...

Yes, but do you currently have an Ethernet from your modem? if your modem is connected to that first desktop, and that is your only connection, then you might try to invest in a wireless router. The router allows you to connects multiple computers to the same DSL line. The modem connects to the router via the the Ethernet cable to the router. (some allow you to connect an extension from the router to a desktop and have the remainder connected wirelessly) Then you can purchase a wireless card for your laptop and for your desktop. the only problem is that even though both cards essentially do the same task, they are installed and look differently. The laptop card looks like a card, the desktop one will have usually an external antenna. The links below are only there to help you to recognize what you will need to purchase and not what you need to buy. Now they also sell modems with wireless router capabilities.

Get a router, that's what they're for. (Routers are designed to connect multiple networks together, in this case the networks would consist of 2 computers and the router on one side and the internet on the other.) Wired or wireless would be your choice. Most wireless routers should have at least one ethernet port (plus the port for a cable/DSL modem) so only one computer would have to have wireless.
