Combat Quick Kill roach baits work well, are safe around pets and children (unless they eat them), and are onlya fraction of the cost of an exterminator. Put them in all your drawers, cabinets, and any other dark places the little beasties can hide. I've had excellent luck with them.

Oh yes. Even if your home was completely vacant for years, roaches can live there. You know what really works for me is the Raid double control plus egg stopper. Here is a link. I am a full time law student and my husband has 3 jobs. We do not keep a very clean house. Plus we live in an apartment in the city. We had serious roaches. So if this stuff worked for us, I mean I haven't even seen a roach in weeks, then it will totally work for you. But, it does take 2 weeks before it stops working and I noticed you should really change out the traps every 6 months. Because at about 5-6 months, you will see them back again.
Don't blame yourself. Bugs happen. Raid really helps. We can't stand the spray though. Good luck.

Are you sure it was a Cockroach you saw? It it strange that you saw only one, why don't you take a look when the kitchen lights are out and people are around, they usually come out in such circumstances. Mind you that kitchen roaches are usually small, take a look under your appliances that are permanently on, they love warm spaces. If you see more than one then you do have a roach problem. With summer in a few months you should not wait.
Do as busybody says in his reply.
If you have children and pets please be very careful with them, when calling the exterminator and after this person has finished his job ask him when can you deeply clean your kitchen and when it will be safe for the kids and pets.
Good luck!

Once you have 'em, you've got 'em. A clean house will not kill the roaches, just hide their disgustingness. A cockroach, as in 1....treat over the counter. You may quickly approach the cost of an exterminator. If you have to go to an exterminator. make sure you get one that guarantees results. He'll have to come back and retreat at least once. The squiggly goo that they put above the door frame is good stuff. Make sure that you actually have cockroaches and not some random bug that found it's way in. The weather is getting buggy.

Home Depot sells a professional strength pesticide that has a hose and nozzle attached. It sprays a long very slim stream of pesticide that can get in between the spaces of your appliances.
I can't remember the name but it's easy to find there.
That stuff works great. I had a problem a couple of years ago with roaches under our deck and it killed them immediately and they were gone for a year. We lived in a highly treed area of the city where bugs were a constant problem but this stuff works like a professional job.
Yes. It sounds like the bugs were already there and were feeding off traces of grease and crumbs from the back of the appliances.
Just go to Home Depot and ask for the professional strength pesticide with the power nozzle. It's real easy to use too.
It will kill all of them I promise.
I'm like you about cockroaches. eeeeecccchhhhhh.
