You would hate something if it's constantly forced on you by the media. It's like Chinese torture. I have to get through 10 highlights on how the Yankee's took a dump or the Redsox didn't shave, before you get to game highlights.
Face it, people other than New Yorkers or Bostonians, really care about the rivalry. Personally, I like any rivalry game.
Dodgers and Giants
Cubs and Cardinals
The lists can go on...........

I live in Maryland and I'm an Orioles fan. We haven't had a winning season here since 1997, and the nightly sellouts for Camden Yards are long gone. We now see our good share of Yankees and Red Sox fans who come into town when their team is playing.
I know that a lot of the Orioles fans here often complain about the drunken rudeness of Yankees fans who when they get enough alcohal in them love to rub it in your face that their team is winning, and look down on you because you don't root for the mighty Yankees. I've seen this first hand going to Orioles games with the Yankees in town before.
I'm not trying to imply that all Yankees fans are rude and beligerent, but I've seen my fair share of them that are.
Red Sox fans are a bit more mild-mannered and I haven't had any problems with them personally, however I've heard other Orioles fans who've made complaints about rude Red Sox fans.
From what I've seen, there have been Yankees and Red Sox fans that have rubbed Orioles fans the wrong way, and neither team is liked a whole lot in general by die-hard O's fans because of that.
Secondly people are complaining about the Red Sox/Yankees because ESPN loves to hype it up. They wouldn't do it if they didn't get huge ratings out of it.
I usually tend to find the Red Sox Yankees games interesting, because there is always drama involved in those games. That's just me though, the only thing I can say is that if you are looking for baseball tonight to give you the most in-depth report about your team, don't rely on ESPN TV as your main sorce of info, unless it's something big.
Just read the local newspaper for your team, follow them online, or listen to the local sports talk station for the team that you root for. Rely on the outlets that soley focus on the team that YOU root for.

No the rest of the country is just sick of Red Soxes and Yankee fans thinking that this is the only rivalry in baseball. That these are only games that matter . When only rarely have anything to do with who will be WS Champ.

The Yankees think they should be able to buy the World Series every year and the Red Sox believe they are the only other team in baseball not named the Yankees.

Yes there are other notable rivalries in sport, but it's the Yankees and Red Sox. Would you rather watch the Cardinals and Cubs, or the Dodgers and Giants, c'mon really.
They are good for baseball, appreciate it, or we probably wouldn't have baseball. Also, it's exciting baseball and that is rare to come by.

Well, if you don't live in the New York-Boston area, it can be annoying because it's a meaningless rivalry outside that area. I live in CT, but I'm not from here and can't understand why they have the rivalry. It makes for some funny stuff, but it's otherwise pretty annoying to anyone who isn't from there.
Plus, it really does look like two rich brats fighting. The richest and second richest teams....

Because a lot of people are Yankee/ Red Sox fans.
If you are a fan of one, you naturally hate the other.
