Some people have told me AM2 is best and some have said 939. Whats the difference? Which is better? And why?
Thank You

S939 is good but it is dead. There are no more new mobos for it. Processor upgrade path is also limited.

AM2 platform has a small performance margin over S939. New mobos and new (and cheaper) processors keep coming out for the AM2 platform. DDR2 RAM (w/c can not be used in S939) are cheap again.

With current prices, I'm getting tempted to build a new rig w/ an X2 on the AM2 platform.

I prefer the 939 because it's so versatile. I've used both and yet the 939 consistently is upgradeable and seems to move just as fast. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for performance wise. the AM2 is very nice but I still constantly have to reboot. It maybe the computer I built and I had a flaw. But the other computer I built using the 939 hasn't had a problem.

They come out with new processor sockets every few or several years to take advantage of newer hardware, and to allow some radical design changes in their processes to take place.
AMD's socket AM2 is technically better because it supports DDR2 RAM, and newer processors will continue to be released for it.
Socket 939 is older, but is arguably more cost effective because it supports DDR RAM. The biggest drawback to socket 939 is that it's been retired; no new processors will be released for it. The last Socket 939 processor was the FX-60. I have an FX-60, and i'm wishing i'd waited until socket AM2 came out before i built my computer.

AM2 is better in terms of having better compatiblity for DDR2 memory and it is faster next to the Socket 939. I prefer the Socket 939 since from what I have come across in terms of Overclocking.. the Socket 939s seem to be far better when it comes to this.

It's AM2, 'cos it supports dual-channel, which can phenomenally increase the performance of RAM.
