It depends what you're looking for.
If you're trying to build a library with nice shelves, etc. then hard covers would be recommended. Especially if they are first editions.
But paperbacks are best to take along on your daily commute or when you travel. Plus, if something happens to them, then it'll be less of a loss moneywise.

But also remember to use your local library. I'm just saying that because I know I used to buy a lot of books and read them once or even ended up not liking them too much. And they take up space and cost a lot of $$$. I now use the library a lot and borrow a much wider variety of books than I would otherwise buy. I sometimes check out books that I'm not really interested in or don't know much about, just to give them a try. And I discovered some great authors that way!

It depends on a few different things. If you want to keep it in a bookcase or don't want to wait for the paperback to come out then a hardback is probably best. If you just want to read it and then get rid of it paperback is probably best. You can then take it to a used/trade bookstore and sometimes get credit to get other paperbacks or pass it on to friends or family who want to read it.

Softcover books are easiest to carry around with you to read on breaks, lunches and on public transportation.

Harbacks are great because they seem to stay intact longer, but paperbacks are great for traveling.
