I have Avast On-Access Scanner and also Spybot running. Do I need some other firewall or will this provide good enough security for me to general surfing chatting internet work? Thanks for you responses.

That combo is what I use, but I still have to run Spybot manually on a regular basis or I slow down a lot.
Spybot keeps trying to turn on my Windows Firewall for me, and I would love to turn it on, but my wife works remotely & Her company has issues with it...

As long as you have not (and never will) disabled XP's built-in Windows Firewall, you should be fine.
Just keep everything updated including Windows Updates from MS.
