Make sure that's all that they are doing. If it is, your seriously being ripped. Its not even a 30 minute job and the belt may be approx 20 -25. So at best 80 to 90 for total cost. Now if your alternator has a different style pulley (meaning the rib count on the belt doesn't match ..maybe belt has 5 ribs and alternator pulley only has 4 slots) they maybe charging extra labor for the time to change pulley, and the cost for the part.

you must have gone to a dealership.. they usually charge union rates and mark up the belt by about 50 percent.. if you have already put it in for service.. call the loca parts store and ask about the price of a belt for your car.. then call the general manager of the dealership and tell him that you feel like you are being ripped off and are going to tell it to the local tv station that has a trouble shooters segment.. and that you are going to tell the reporter who you spoke with.. five will get you ten.. they will give you a discount.. if you took it to a local shop tell the owner the same thing.. it is no more than a fifteen minute job for anyone with any kind of mechanical knowledge.. ask what they are charging for the belt and the labor.. if you don't ask questions and get answers.. you will be overcharged.. you will be mad.. but they will have the money.. SPEAK UP.

If all they are doing is putting on a belt, yes you are. You can get belts all day long for less than $25 and putting them on takes every bit of 15 minuites if you stop and smoke a cigerette or two while you do it. Is it possible that they are replacing an idler pulley or tensioner while they are putting on the belt? if there is no other work to be done, take it for a second opinion before you let the first place touch it again.

heck yeah,
its called supply and demand
they can supply the know how or the small agile hands
and they demand you hand over an arm and a leg to do it.
The belt broke on my mom's 97 explore while I was out of town. My dad had to take it to a place to get it put on because he couldn't get his hand between the fan and all the pulleys.
And even after talking them down quite a bit they still charge him $45 bucks for a 10 minute job. That was without the price of the belt, because he had already bought it at autozone.
So if you have the know how (usually there is a diagram near the top of the radiator) and the small agile hands, do it yourself.

For a lot of major garages (dealers for example) that is about right.... $50 or so for the belt and $200 for the labor, shop supplies and all the other add ons. For a neighborhood garage, take off a hundred. For your self, $25 deposit at Auto Zone for the Idler tool to get it out of your way and $25 to $35 for the belt. And if you have never done one before, it will take you half the afternoon and a couple of busted knuckles till you find out the idler gear has a left hand thread on it. You don't have to remove it, just get it up and kinda out of the way so you can get the belt off of the alternator and then the rest is easy.

250.00 for a belt !?! even if you have a supercharged 3.8 and you had both the belts replaced it would still be under 100.00. demand a detailed explanation of what they did and or a refund remind them one unhappy customer tells alot more people about their dissatisfaction than 25 people tell about good service.so if they want to remain in business they should not be overcharging anyone like this!

Call around; but many shops mark up their parts and there's an hour of labor involved as these aren't fun. They may add a diagnostic fee in there as well. $250 seems a bit much to me too; but these places have to pay overhead as well. It costs a lot of money to do business.
