Malu is a fantail goldfish. She is sitting in the top corner of the tank, only moving occassionally. All her fins are flat. She only eats a very small amount. She has been like this for about a month. I have tried medicating her with Pimafix and Melafix according to the aquarium store advice and the bottle advice. I have tried salts. I change her water 20% once a week. The water levels are normal. The water is filtered and airated. Her mate is fine, he is eating and growing and seems really happy. I just dont understand what could be wrong. She was happy for the first 3 months in the tank. I dont want to her to die. I have had fish for years and have never had this problem before. What else can i do? Please help me!

With the fact that there is another fish in the tank and the fact that it's been quite a while that your fish has been acting oddly, I think it's quite safe to rule out parasites, fungus or most diseases. You are describing classic symptoms of ammonia / nitrite poisoning. It is possible that this fish is simple more sensitive than the other and that your test kit isn't reading correctly. They do go bad sometimes. I would suggest you take a water sample to a shop to have it tested just to rule out the possibility.

Past that, clamped fins are an obvious sign of stress. Could the tank be a bit crowded? Maybe they have grown more than you realize in the last three months. Give it a hard look with an eye to their size now vs 3 months ago. Maybe the other fish is being a bit territorial or otherwise aggressive? I would suggest watching them from as far away as possible for as long as possible and watch for any signs of this. Remember, they will act differently if they see you than they do at any other time.

Other than these things there are very few realistic possibilities and practically none that you would be able to fix if they were the case. Hopefully one of the suggestions you have received will fix the problem. Best wishes

MM

It seems that she is having issues with the water for some reason or gill issues. Have you checked her for parasites like "Ich"? Usually, when fish are at the top of the tank they are having breathing issue or the water PH is out of whack. Also, how is the temperature. Is she bigger than usual? Maybe she is having a breeding issue? Hopefully, I gave you some good ideas or things to check out with Malu.

She may be bloated, the pea "trick" is that the fiber from the soft pea helps the fish pass any blockage and relieve pressure on the swim bladder.

if she is getting picked on at all that may contribute, contrary to some belief that fish don't feel or react, they do show signs of depression. has the environment around the tank changed?

good luck

confident, if one fish is unwell they're going to all get unwell. the only affliction i've got ever considered take over a tank (and it befell when I presented a clean fish) exchange into little white spots began to look on him a pair days later. Then the different fish have been given it and died too.

You need to try to pea trick. You can search for it on line. Many people have had sick fish so they squeeze a pea and drip it into the tank. Within a short while the fish is healed.

Good luck.

It sounds like your fish has velvet (a parasite). You need to treat it with a medication containing Malachite Green. Follow the package directions and he should be fine. Best of luck!Start this treatment ASAP!
