You know, that's a really good question.
Perhaps you should ask your local newspapers why they spend so much time on the VT shooter and not much about Liviu Librescu.
While you have them on the phone, you might ask why there's always an article about a soldier dying in Iraq, but not a word about anything else. Isn't it possible that there are heroic acts going on?
What about your local firemen? Surely in the past year they've done.... something.
What about the staff of the nearest emergency room? Anyone ever walk out of there after being wheeled in after a high speed ambulance ride? If so, someone did something heroic.
Heroes are all around us. You see them in the most unlikely places. Selling poppies at the grocery store on Memorial Day, for instance.

aunts, uncles, teachers, some sports figures (David Robinson, Tim Duncan, Mia Hamm, come to mind)... there are plenty of inspiring people out there, still. A president has never been someone to "look up to." They've all had their shady sides.

Politicians? Nope. They get bribed too easily.
Musicians? Nope. They are junkies or sell-outs.
Teachers? Nope. They are being arrested for having sex with their students.
Cops? Nope. They abuse their authority.
Military? Nope. They like to shoot innocent people.
Firefighters? Nope. They let their own burn to death.
Doctors? Nope. They steal drugs to be sold on the street.
Pilots? Nope. They like to fly while drunk.
Lawyers? Nope. Do I really need to explain?
News Anchors? Nope. They don't tell the truth.
Sheesh. Poor bastards have no one to look up to !

Are you crazy? Nobody can trust the U.N. The organization is so corrupt that major changes are needed. Some teachers are good, but not Debra Lafave. Church leaders are another good choice. Politicians these days are the worst choice.

i am so sick of parents and all of this crap.
kids barely ever want to look up to this parents anymore, because 95% of the time they are pissed at them.
this is because parents are so overprotective.
we are kids. we are not going to college parties. we are not gonna go out and get drunk. we are not going to have sex. we are not going to do anything really.
parents dont understand that, even though they are only trying to help their kids, if they just calmed down a bit, we would be much happier to oblige. the more strict you are with your kids, the more you are driving them to be wild and crazy, and to disobey you. trust me. i know a girl whos parents are way way wayy overprotective. they drove her and her sister crazy. when her sister went to college, she started getting drunk and sleeping around. half of the time it was to spite her parents.
and usually its just the concept of being able to do things. if we were allowed to, we would not overdo it. unless you have the occasional bad seed for a kid. then youre screwed.
