I am pretty shy, what can I do to prepare myself for this?

I was always shy, myself, but something happened when I got up in front of those people. It's kind of hard to explain. Your nerves are all jumbly and your heart is pounding and your legs start shaking . . . But then you get out there, lock eyes with someone who is smiling with you, and sing your heart out. Keep in mind that a singing performance is a gift of yourself to your audience members. It's not their job to judge you; it's there job to accept your gift. (And if they don't get that, that's their problem.)

That said, it's your job to make it a precious gift. Sing from your soul, immerse yourself into the words, the phrasing, the meaning of what you're trying to say. Of course, it was also your job to practice, practice, practice BEFORE you get up there to sing, because THAT is what allows you to focus on your gift. (You can't be worried about whether or not you'll forget the words, or miss a note, or take a breath at the wrong space, etc. If you've practiced enough, you won't HAVE to think about that stuff, because your body will remember it.)

Anyway, stop telling yourself you're shy. Instead, tell yourself you're Santa Claus and you're getting ready to give the most precious gift you have to this unsuspecting audience: YOU!

Now go out there and knock 'em dead! :)

its a good idea to record yourself singing first, so you have an idea about how proficient you are, and possibly make changes to your style and tone accordingly.

As for the confidence issues, I agree with some other posters that you should sing in front of family first, before singing to the public.

You always sing to impress a certain small group of people. Could be your parents, boyfriend/girlfriend, teacher, another singer, etc. Always imagine that group is there no matter who is in front of you. You're doing it to prove yourself to your small group.
