The first thing you do is find out what the U. S. Dept. of Transportation regulations are.

http://www.dot.gov/

The next thing you do is find out what the state regulations are. Go to your state's Dept. of Transportation web site and get their regulations.

I think you will find that your vehicles have to be registered both with USDOT and your state's DOT if they are over 10,000 pounds GVW (I think it's 10,000 pounds).

Once you understand all the regulations, organize and incorporte your company, apply for your permits, buy your insurance, find a good dispatcher, a good lawyer, and a good CPA.

You can't just buy a truck/trailer and say, "OK, now I'm a trucker."

Unless you have someone backing you that has money or a bank that will work with you, there is no way an average person can open a trucking business. Where I work at has spent over 400,000 in the past 15 months and is only a small company.

Your kidding right? Your asking us about something as complicated and involved a business as you can attempt to start. Are you a truck driver or are you a dispatcher for a company or are you a broker for some drivers? What qualifies you to start a trucking company?

insurance will cost alot of money. Most co's will only write it with an extremely high deductable.

Also, fuel charges gave skyrocketed, while rates remain stagnant

Now, what kind of trucking do you want to do?.Long haul, local, specialized hauling, etc.Be preparedto go a lon time with no income.

Good luck.
