Tampons might not be a good idea, if you don't get your period while at prom it can be painful to remove the tampon. There are alternatives to tampons such as menstrual cups.
One is called Instead. It is a plastic like cup (almost like a diaphragm) that is inserted inside of you and it catches and holds your flow and can be worn up to 12 hours and then must be thrown away. Check it out here

Then there is the Moon-cup and the Diva-cup that are reusable and work on the same principle, they are inserted and catch your flow holding it till you take the cup out.

One plus to these is they are easily removed and without pain.
I have tried the Instead product it works pretty well.
Hope this helps and have a great time at your prom.

You can. Using a tampon without menstruating can increase the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome though. Read the insert that comes in the box of tampons and watch for warning signs.
But if you think you might start, the slight (very slight) risk of TSS and the possible discomfort of removing the tampon if you were wrong are probably worth not having to deal with the embarrassment of bleeding through your prom dress.

No, it won't hurt to wear a tampon to the prom. Sometimes I do the same if I'm pretty sure I'm about to start, and don't want to have an accident at work. You won't feel it as long as it's inserted properly, even if you aren't having a period.
And it won't hurt getting it out! It's hard to believe all the people who are saying it'll be painful. If it's dry, just add a little water when you're removing it. No big deal!

If you use a tampon and don't have your cycle it could feel quite uncomfortable, as it would make the vagina too dry. If you cycle doesn't start and you have to remove the dry tampon, it will also be uncomfortable. And whatever you do do not leave it in for more than 8 hours, it could make you sick! If you need to take it out and its too dry, use a little water to moisten it first.
I would suggest a pad instead, but you've already said no way.
So if you are going that way, take care.

I did that and it felt horribly uncomfortable-I did it right before gym and couldn't finish the mile-that's like a 5 min. window of time. Two hours of dancing would be excruciating-every step you take would move it as it draws every last drop of moisture from you and swells, making you cramp. Bring handsantizer and keep an eye on the floor, or try to go to some fast food joint near the armory if you feel yourself leaking-surely they allow students that freedom.

For just one night, you should be fine. Just make sure that when you find a clean, uninfested bathroom, to take it out. Never wear one for more than 5 hours. Even that is a long time. Have fun.

Actually it can be irritating to put one in if you're not on your period, since there's nothing to lubricate it going in.
However, I've done it before myself (back before I got them-- to practice) and although it is slightly uncomfortable, I don't think it's actually harmful, especially if only for a couple of hours. Use one with the least absorbency just in case, and take it out as soon as you can get to a non cockroach-infested bathroom. (eww!)

You should be okay to put one in before you start, it won't hurt anything but it may be uncomfortable going in and when you take it out because of dryness...If you are worried about toxic shock that happens when women leave a tampon in for a very long time.
