While u r correct in the case of most other games, where toss has no great impact on the final outcome of the game, because in these games both the sides of the playing area are available to the teams in equal measure and there is no unfair advantage to any side. But in cricket the same strip(read pitch) has to be used by both the sides and therefore a toss is a necessity to decide which team uses the strip for what purpose(batting or bowling). It, sort of amounts to unfair trade practice, because the side having second use of the strip(for batting or bowling) does not get the pitch in the original shape as at the beginning of the game.

The toss is a customary method to give an option to one of the teams to decide on whether to bowl or bat first. This method is being followed in almost all sports and games and has been in use for centuries, and has been accepted as the best method. So, on any given day, whether a team wins the toss or not, if it really has the potential to deliver the goods, the toss is not ofmuch significance. "Had we won the Toss" is only an excuse by incompetent teams to cover up their defeat !
To sum up, luck is required to win the toss, but only a team effort is needed to win a match !
