If a man twice my size got into a verbal argument with me that threatened to escalate, but he was entirely in the wrong, would you respect me more or less if I backed off?

It would depend. If it was a fight over say, a bad choice of words or a parking space, I'd respect you more for backing off.
But I must admit I really admire men who stand up for their convictions in the face of big, dumb bullies. If it was an argument over an issue that really mattered to you, I'd probably have more respect for you if you stood your ground. Also I'd stick around to nurse you if the thug did any damage.
Edit: when I say, stand up for your convictions, I don't mean that you should get violent with him. I mean more the firm, but non-violent resistance employed by Gandhi (though on a much smaller scale of course). Just thought I should make that clear. Sometimes a person can still get hurt doing that.

It really depends. There are lots of factors, two major ones being how well do I know you and what was the argument about.
I will say, though, that I love a guy who can fight. (As long as it's not me he's fighting...ha ha ha...)

Geesh! What good are you if you are beaten to a bloody pulp? Stand up for yourself to a point but have the good sense to know when to leave.
