I remember watching it in the late 70s but I can't find it anywhere and can't remember the name. I thought it was just called 'War of the Worlds' but can't find one made in the late 70s. And I'm sure it was a made-for-tv movie too. It was based on the real life events that took place that afternoon when HG Wells read his story over the radio. Americans in Philidelphia maybe or Boston, thought his story was an 'actual' news story and that America had indeed been invaded by martians! lol! So panic ensued for a few hours until everyone realized it was just a radio story. Not a real news story...lol The same thing happen (on a smaller scale) in 1983, when they showed the made-for-tv movie 'The Day After' about nuclear war and showed it without commercials, using real-looking news footage and people who didn't know about the movie who tuned in, really thought the bomb had been dropped on America...lol

There are at least two movies about the "War of the Worlds" broadcast and its impact on the general public.
The first one is "The Night That America Trembled", the September 9th, 1957 broadcast of "Studio One".
The second is "The Night That Panicked America" from 1975.
See the link below for a list of movies based on "War of the Worlds" or about the broadcast. It has links to fuller details on both movies mentioned above.
Hope this helps.
