Were you surprised at how loving, fun, and social they are?

My daughter got me hooked. After my dog was killed, I was grieving because he was my best friend and the dearest pet I'd ever had. I adored him. I didn't think I could ever get over his death and love another animal like him... especially one so small, let alone one that I feared & couldn't stand!

Oh, what a delight they turned out to be! Animals are truly God's angels on this earth! So loving and forgiving.

Rats are wonderful pets. I always had rats all through growing up. One rat would even run toward me if I set him down outside, he looked like some kind of puppy bounding through the grass. Another when she was a baby would fall asleep in my arms. I love them.

my daughter has a rat she rescued from my reptiles--the plan was to keep it alive until the reptile got hungry--she ended up hand feeding it sugar water and cried hysterically when I attempted to get on with the feeding. We gave in and let her keep it and she hand fed it until it's eyes were open and that was 2 years ago--she loves that rat. We let her take it with her everywhere--family vacations, hurricane evacuations of course, everything--rats are really easy pets to keep--they'll eat anything. Ours is extremely tame probably from all the attention and from being hand fed as an infant--she is a great pet.

Yesterday my daughter noticed a lump on the rat's chest and I thought it was a tumer--after some brief Internet research I concluded that it is probably a mammary tumer which are quite common, and usually show up at about 2. --very sad.

I guess the only problem with rats as pets is that they don't live very long-2-to 3 years. My daughter and I looked up the oldest rat and we found one claim of an 8year old rat.

apparently the mammary tumers are easily operable(I don't know who would do it or how much it could cost) but then you will probably be faced with a second tumer etc. If you spay your female pet rat it reduces her chances of developing mammary tumers according to my brief web research.(don't believe everything you see in print.)

We have 2. 1 is jet black my daughter calls him Toffee and the other is a Siamese and I called him Fudge. They are adorable and are loved like crazy.
They are the best pet for young children. It's a pitty that they do not live long though. My daughter will be devastated when they die, as will I.

I own one rat, his name is Max and he's great. He's still a bit flighty though but i think it's just because he's still young. He doesn't like my boyfriend very much and will escape back onto me whenever he has the chance. He gets cranky when you put him back in the cage and does fast laps of it as if to say "look! look at this, i can't live here!"

Rats really are wonderful pets, better than hamsters or mice, generally, and easy to take care of.

I have never had a rat. My mom thinks they are nasty. But my friend has one and it's very cute and it's nice. She keeps it outside b/c her mom thinks they are nasty too and it got out of the cage. Then they found it, I think her mom was disappointed. lol
