Proxima Centauri is a small red dwarf star which is part of the three star system known as Alpha Centauri. Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B are approximately 4.36 light years away while Proxima Centauri is about 4.22 light years away. It's within about 13,000 AU of the two Alpha Centauri stars and is sometimes referred to as Alpha Centauri C.

Two of the previous answers are wrong, and one is correct. Par for the course on Y!A.
The answer posted by "injanier" is a good one. The correct spelling is "Centauri," which is a reference to a mythical creature called a centaur. (You wouldn't want your sister to date one.)
Alpha Centauri contains the stars closest to our sun. About 4.6 LY, or something like 30,000,000,000,000 (30 trillion) miles away. Not a convenient trip at today's gasoline prices.
