It all depends on how you apply your technique. I'd say the most realistic way to make a living as a mime today is to get involved in a physical theatre company. Cirque du Soleil is one, PUSH Physical Theatre is another. There are lots of them out there, you just have to know where to look, and many of them host summer workshops or take on interns to study with them (Not Cirque), which would be a good opportunity for you.
I just finished my degree in theatre, and my department chair was known as "the foremost authority on body movement and mime in the English speaking world," so I've been around the mime block a time or twelve. I would advise you to take Marcel Marceau's work with a grain of salt, and look to Etienne Decroux and the people who studied with him for inspiration.
Other things to study that complement mime and make you more employable: dance, dance and more dance (especially modern), clown, biomechanics, and (believe it or not) aikido.
So, I guess the roundabout answer to your question is no, mimes do not make good money, but dedicated and talented performers who are trained in mime and use that technique to flavor their work can very well do so.

Check with Cirque du Soleil. Many of their performers also mime as part of their performances. But in all honesty, you will have to have other skills -miming is just a single skill and is not enough in and of itself. Check out the Blue Man Group, they are a mime group. It's all up to how clever you are, and what else you do with your miming. Go see as many theatrical groups as you can. That will give you lots of ideas. Many performing groups at Universities use mime as a start. What you see will open up your eyes. And you'll have a lot of fun.
