So, today I went to a book sale at the local library. Just the cheapy 50 cent paperbacks, etc. While looking among the Ernest Hemingway books, I ran across A Moveable Feast. At first glance, not a big deal. He's my favorite author, I've read the book, that's it! However, flipping through the pages, I realize that this is a 1st publication book (1964). I also found an old newspaper article (also from 1964) that someone had inserted into the book, telling about the release of A Moveable Feast by Hemingway's late wife. The article was written three years after Hemingway's death and was inside a 1st edition book!

Though I do not plan to sell my new-found treasure, my question remains: how much is this worth?

This is a hardback book. I was just using the paperbacks thing as an example of what type of booksale this was. Again though, the copy I have is a hardback copy.

Check online at www.alibris.com. You can do a search for your book. It's possible they have copies that you can compare yours to to get an estimate.

Well, I looked on eBay, and they (1st Editions) are selling for between $11 and $30, or at least that what the bids are at right now. However, that doesn't mean that's what the book is worth, only what someone is willing to take for it right now.

If there is a used book seller with a large inventory in your city, I would advise you to go there. We have several where I live, and they are always happy to give an appraisal. Since it was published in 1964, I imagine that there are still quite a few 1st ed. floating around, but the newspaper clipping you found in it might add to the value. Call around and find out if anyone in your area is qualified to appraise it.

I wish you the best!

(And I am envious as can be--it's my favorite book by him, and finding it like that is just great!)

Going by my Antiques Roadshow knowledge of priceless books?

Anywhere between $500 to $1000.

In that era, a "first edition" would be the first of the hardbound edition, not a paperback, which would have been issued later. Check on amazon.com or alibris for actual first editions.

Contact a local rare bookseller. It is a good thing to have it appraised in case of fire or theft!

I don't know how much it's worth, but if I were you I would get it appraised.
