I use my lanyard for my keycards for work. - I made one out of beads so that it's stylish and useful. Since most businesses use at the very least id cards, and many use card access to get into the building, they are more popular than ever.

You can also clip a name badge to it, for use at meetings or social events.
At work, or a convention, you can clip on your membership card or security pass.
If you're a crafter, use it to hang scizzors or another tool.

do you mean a lanyard? thats a cord for hanging things like whistles or keys around your neck.
