As per the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary, irony is, "3. Discrepancy between the expected and the actual state of affairs; a contradictory or ill-timed outcome of events as if in mockery of the fitness of things."
However, it is not necessarily ironic if one thinks about it. Schools that have metal detectors and constant police presence don't have senseless mass casualty-type shootings. Schools that do not have these things have school shootings. When looked at that way, it doesn't seem to be quite so unexpected.
The Chinese have had this phenomenon for centuries. One day, someone takes their father's sword down from the wall, heads out to the marketplace and kills people until they are themselves killed. It was not even considered dishonorable.
The Malay did this in a more systematic way, with the people who felt compelled to this sort of profligate homicidal exuberance targeting it towards their enemies. Is from this that we get the word, "amok."
These mass killings for little or no reason are not new, and they are never going to go away. The best anyone can try for is to have systems in place through which the senseless assailant can be taken out immediately upon demostrating his or her willingness to attack bystanders.
*shrug*

Oh, Sweetie, I love your optmism but actually, something happens at the schools in not-so-great neighborhoods all the time. It's kind of a case of too frequent to mention. (Except local news, they get coverage locally, you bet.) I think it's just that the events at the "very good schools" were so extreme! Day-to-day, one-on-one, it's so very sad, but (sadly) not a big deal, media-wise. One-on-The-Whole-School; that's BIG news! And: I'm not offended; it is what it is. I just wish I knew WHAT IT IS! Or someone could say what it is, because we need to fix this! Got any ideas? I mean other that the one you mentioned in your question?

I think the thing is, is that the people in those inter city schools are so used to dealing with depression and bad things happening they have developed a mechanism for dealing with it without all the heavy violence. I think they call it humor.

It isn't going to matter how much security any school or college starts using, if someone wants to hurt anyone else they'll find a way around any security system. Give it a few months. Anyone will do whatever they want, the word security is already a thing of the past!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
