Your right. S comes from San Francisco, and D does come from denver. As for the value....it depends on how many of that coin in that year were minted from there. if only a few, then yea it would make it more rare. Just gotta check a coin collecting book for value.

Examples of mint marks in United States coinage include P for the Philadelphia Mint, D for the Denver Mint, S for the San Francisco Mint, W for the West Point Mint, CC for the Carson City Mint, C for the Charlotte Mint, and O for the New Orleans Mint. Most coins of the Philadelphia Mint earlier than 1980 are unmarked.
Of course the San Francisco Mint has been closed since the 1989 Loma Prieta quake...
I don't believe it affects the coins value... but I haven't messed with coins since I was a young lad.

Your right about the S it is San Francisco, and the D is Denver. This doesn't add to the value of a coin, it simply identifies where the coin originated.

The D and S are mint marks. Mint marks are an initial or symbol of the mint that produced the coin. The value of a coin to coin collectors depends on scarcity, condition, and above all, demand. Sometimes mint marks are part of this, for example, coins made Carson City (mint mark = "CC") are popular because of the colorful history of that mint (Wild West of the 1870s, etc.)
I'm starting a set of pages about each of the US mints on my web site -- http://www.valuable-coin-stories.com/us-mints.html
