Depending on the brand, it may not make a difference. I've come across at least two brands which list the nutritional details of the rat food, hamster food, gerbil food, etc, and when you look, they're exactly the same. You could easily use the food until you get some new stuff, or consider donating it to a shelter if you really don't want it.

I think it should be ok. I have 2 pet rats also, and a Guinea Pig and I share the G. Pig food with the rats., I don't think there is any difference. Only, I was buying hamster food for the G. Pig and they told me at Petco not to cuz of the hamster food not having enough vitamins that the G. Pigs require.
Anyway, you can read the pkg. of the hamster food to see if the label mentions anything, such as "good source for all pets", or something to the similar. The pkg. should state either way.

Hamster extrusion is good, but it isn't enough for them.
It'salready been mentioned here, make your own food it is cheaper and at the same time better for them. I'm going to put a link here for you with some recipes and other goodies for pet rats.

Rats are omnivor they require both protien and veggies. Hamster food is okay as a base but Rats require more protien that Hamsters. By adding "dog food" or any higer protien type food you will be giving your Rat what it needs. Rats also need some source of vegatable. A well balanced Rat food will give you everything your pet rat needs. But you don't have to pay the big $$$ for "RAT food" make up your own. Buy a 50lb bag of Bird seed the one has whole seeds. A small bag of dog food or cat food The larger kibbles help with their teeth. A bag of dired fruit about 1lb. And a box of veggie O's (rodent treats) mix it all together in a big rubbermaid container and you have better than store bought "Rat Food" at 1/100th of the price. This mix should cost 30 - 50 dollars and will probally last one rat a year or two. I have 7 rats and I still have about 40 lbs of food left. That's probally 8 months worth. They still need fresh veggies though just like they would if you fed them store bought rat food.
Try it
Good luck
