In the 1973 movie, "Walking Tall", Buford Pusser was played by Joe Don Baker. In the sequels, "Part 2, Walking Tall" and "Final Chapter - Walking Tall" he was played by Bo Svenson.
In the 2004 movie, the name of the character is changed to Chris Vaughn and he was played by The Rock.

To add to KK oz's answer, the newest one (a supposed sequel to the aweful remake) just released on dvd, 'Walking Tall: The Payback' has Kevin Sorbo playing the Sheriff, only now his name is 'Nick Prescott'...lol It went strait-to-dvd. And coming strait-to-dvd this fall is the already made 'Walking Tall 3', which also has Kevin Sorbo playing a 'Nick' character.
The movie studio has the rights to the title 'Walking Tall' but not the rights to the actual true story and to use the name Bufford Pusser. Bufford's real life brother owns the rights to the real story but lost the rights to use the title 'Walking Tall'. But, hopefully, there will soon be a 'Bufford Pusser Story' or something that will match the original 3 movies. One can hope :-)
