Hakeem Olajuwon of the University of Houston was drafted #1 overall by the Rockets. He went on to a long, successful career.
Sam Bowie of the University of Kentucky was drafted #2 overall by the Trailblazers. He had an excellent rookie year and broke his tibia in three places very early in his second career in a freak accident - no one was around him, he just came down funny. It was the absolute WORST injury I've ever seen on camera. He rehabbed for most of the next two seasons before he came back but was never the same player.

one million. Hakeen Olajuwon - replaced into drafted first because of the fact great enormous adult males have been very uncommon in the previous and purely a hand packed with them got here visiting each and every era and the Rockets necessary a huge guy and concept Hakeem could fill the placement. 2. Sam Bowie - style of a dissapointment he replaced into harm and injured quite much all for the period of his profession the Greg Oden of in the previous. yet now Greg Oden's actully stepping up. 3. Michael Jordan - He replaced into drafted 0.33 because of the fact in assessment to the different 2 he wasn't 7'0 and robust guards come extra regularly then great centers however the NBA did no longer think of Jordan could be that great and depart such an effect on the sport as he did. It labored out completely for him nonetheless getting a huge basketball marketplace and winning 6 championships no longer too shabby for a third overall p.c.. in case you question me ?

Hakeem Olajuwon and Sam Bowie. Olajuwon went on to be one of the greatest centers of all time and won two championships with the Houston Rockets. Sam Bowie is known mainly for being drafted above Michael Jordan.

1. Hakeem Olajuwon - He became Houston's franchise player and led the team to back-to-back championships in '94-'95;
2. Sam Bowie - He'll forever be Portland's curse until, of course, they finally win a championship. They bypassed MJ primarily because they already had a formidable two-guard in Clyde Drexler. So they settled for the big guy Bowie who turned out to be a serious medical case. He was a talented player but was very brittle and injury-prone, just like his predecessor at Portland, Bill Walton.

Hakeem Olajuwon went to the Houston Rockets where he eventually won two championships. He was voted one of the 50 greatest players of all-time. Sam Bowie was taken by the Portland Trailblazers who were in need of a center. Beset by injuries, he was a good player but certainly not a franchise player.

Hakeem Olajuwan was the obvious first pick up the draft, and you really can't blame portland for going with Bowie since they had a similar type of player to MJ by the name of Clyde Drexler. In hindsight it was a mistake, but I think they get unfairly criticized for that. Nobody knew Michael was going to be the type of player he turned out to be, and an atheletic big man is rare.
