you just have to catch yourself each time you put your hand to your mouth. i bit my nails til i was 45 yrs old. that was the only thing that worked. putting nasty tasting stuff on your nails doesn't usually work. all you have to do is wash your hands and it's gone.

I bit my nails for 23 years. I paint my nails, even if it's only with a clear polish, because if they look nice I'll be less likely to bite them and the taste of the nailpolish reminds me that I have them in my mouth. It's not a bad taste, just different. A wake up call.
I also carry around a nail file. Sometimes I would accidentally snag one, bite it a little (just to even things up) and end up with ravaged fingers again. Carrying a file lets me controll how much of the nail I take off and gives me no excuse whatsoever to put those things in my mouth.
There's a stage you'll go through in the growing out proccess where it'll seem like you've collected the whole world under your fingernails. If you hang in there just a little longer, they'll form a natural barrier and stop collecting quite so much. It's worth it, trust me!
When they're beautifull and long, treat yourself to a manicure. You'll be so proud that your actual nails look so great you'll never want to bite them again!

Buy about 10 fingernail clippers and always carry one with you. Put one in your desk at work. Put one in your car. Put one in every room at home. Whenever you begin to bite your nails, stop yourself and use the clipper to trim the ragged nail you created. This worked for me. It didn't happen overnight, but over the course of a couple of months I mostly stopped biting my nails. I still do once in a while, usually when watching a movie.

Go to a nail shop and get those fake nails put on. Have then file the nails down low so you don't look freaky. You will not be able to bite your nails and your nails will look instantly better. Let them grow out and get them filled every two weeks.

I haven't had this problem before, but I've heard about buying that nasty-tasting stuff and painting it on your nails, or doing your nails up really pretty so you won't bite them. =)

Have you tryed any of the products? you can but them from a pharmacy, or the supermarket. If you however are a really really bad habit with that and you still keep on biting, i cant help you. I had a bad habit, and I just stopped, on my own. Good luck!

Put chili powder, or vasaline on them so that when you bite them it burns your mouth or tastes really bad. Then that taste will be the first thing you think of when you go to bite your nails, and you shouldn't be doing it anymore!

Discipline, actually. Just consciously force yourself not to do it, and after a week or two it'll stop being an unconscious habit. You can also try chewing other things, like gum, to get over the initial hump.
