I am traveling to Mexico in a few weeks by cruise ship. I have applied for an American passport about 10 weeks ago; my birth certificate was required to be sent along with my application. I am getting concerned as I may have neither passport nor birth certificate on the day the ship is scheduled to sail. What ather documents will be accepted to enter Mexico and back to U.S. by cruise ship. Thanks

You SHOULD have a U.S. passport as of January 23, 2007 to travel to Mexico. If you are flying, no other documentation will be accepted. I just went to Mexico (drove) about two months ago and I almost didn't get back into the country because I couldn't find my f-ing passport.

For cruise goers, you don't need one until January of 2008.
"Alternatively, until otherwise required as noted above, U.S. citizens must present proof of citizenship in the form of a passport (valid or expired for less than 10 years), original birth certificate, state-issued certified copy of a birth certificate from the Department of Health and Vital Statistics, or original Naturalization papers. "

So, you'd better hoof it down to the county recorder in your area and have another one printed up. You can have it in a day.

Why don't you just get another birth certificate. You have time. To cruise you need a photo ID, birthcertificate or the passport.
Here is the number to call to check status of passport. If the line is busy, keep trying. Explain your situation.

In post-9/11 America you will need a passport to RETURN to the United States, regardless of whether or not you needed one to leave.

Now, go to a Post Office, and ask them for help with your passport - which is what you should have done anyway.

Also, go the the US DEPARTMENT OF STATE online - they will give you all sorts of information from visas to vaccines.
