They dont usually check earlier than that unless they are having contrations or feel pressure, or if they are in pain or bleeding.

Makes sense to me. SO many women I hear get checked for Dialation at 35 weeks. GET told their 1cm and are feverishly ready for a baby any day. SOME women are 1cm dialated for 4 weeks. MEANS NOTHING REALLY.
Waiting until week 39 would be a more common time to check. SINCE your that much closer to your due date

My doctor started checking at 36 weeks, but I wish he'd waited longer (not the most comfortable thing in the world if you know what I'm saying ;) ).

I am surprised that he didn't check you. If you want to know, you should ask him to check you. I always like to know where I stand. My doctors have always checked at 36 weeks. My doctor with my last child stripped my membranes at 38 weeks.

I asked my midwife when they will start checking for that and she told me that she does not check unless I ask for it. She said most ladies start getting curious to know about 38 weeks but she would check sooner if I asked her to.

Can only speak for me, I saw my doc every week from 35 weeks on. He checked me at each appt for dilation. I wouldn't worry though because you are full term so if anything happens, your baby will be ok.

As soon as I mentioned that my braxton hicks contractions were more frequent and sometimes painful-my doctor checked me at 34 weeks.

Typically-- you get the "36 week sheet" (meaning the sheet to cover you up for the exam)....but you really do not 'have' to be checked unless you are contracting, or having other problems.
