After about an hour's use my Compaq desktop just powers down. Could it be a virus or overheating? This just started today. Never had it happen before. Any insights might be helpful. Thanks.

There are several reasons why. Firstly check your CPU fan (you'll have to open your case) to see if it is working. If it's not then its probabily a failsafe to keep the CPU from overheating. CPU stands for central processing unit. Make sure opening the case doesn't void your warranty. Another reason could be a power conservation feature. If you are running windows, go to: start>control panel>power options, and choose "never" for hibernation. Hope this helps! : ]

Possibly hardware problem:

1. RAM - If you have 2 modules, try one stick at a time. OR check w/ memtest.

2. OVERHEATING processor - Install a monitoring software such as Everest, Speedfan, etc. and monitor your temps. If system temp is also high, improve case ventilation.

3. POWER SUPPLY - Install a monitoring software and check voltage fluctuations. Set some voltage alarms.

BUT you could also try to do a system restore.

the two my lady pal and her mom have pronounced comparable issues. the only trend i could desire to make certain is that internet Explorer develop into open each and every time it shuts down. If its a similar, you're able to be able to attempt reinstalling those classes before reinstalling the OS. My concept is that it may desire to be a controversy with a sparkling replace to IE. So installation an before version could restore the issue. yet i don't likely be attentive to. i've got not tried something different than a pandemic test yet.

It sounds like an energy-saving command. My Macbook has a sleep mode that it goes into after a certain period of idle time.
