The phrase came from the fact that in Europe, stray cats and dogs would hide or take shelter in the storm drains and sewers. When it rained, the all came running out at once, like they were part of the water. Thus, making people think it was actually raining animals.

I am unclear of the origin....but it means a very heavy violent like rain....you know the kind that leaves a sting as it hits you...this is because cats and dogs are notorious for fighting

haha. "raining cats & dogs" is a way of saying that it's raining really hard. i know it sounds really stupid. it's a cliche. i have no idea how it originated, but it probably never rained cats & dogs [x

It is true that tornatos have picked up animals and dropped them somewhere else. I think it came from something like that. Frogs, fish, and maybe a cat or dog.

its from the rennisance or whatever, the roofs of the houses would get slippery when it rained and peoples pets would go out the window and fall off the house
