All too well, dear. Nelson Mandela well understood his place in history, his martyrdom. Mandela knew what he was suffering was for the greater good of his country. Cobain had serious drug and alcohol problems, had no such world-wide vision of his purpose in life, and a spouse who was indulging in as much, if not more, unhealthy behavior as he was. He became even more hopeless, and in a moment of unchallenged despair, gave up entirely.
It can happen to any of us. Some of us will never have the opportunity to learn our strengths in facing such a challenge. Others will face this often. When you, or anyone comes to this crossroads, keep in mind that you will feel better sometime, and ask for help from those around you, and your community. Remind yourself that winter always changes to spring.

That is a very interesting question. Most of us live for the here and now.For what we can get out of life for ourselves. On the other hand there are those who have a calling and a vision to live unselfishly for something bigger than themselves. In this group we could include Mother Teresa and Ghandi as well as Mandela. Some would say that they had that calling from God.
Mandela's life had focus and purpose. He was fighting the evil of apartheid in South Africa.(This was his life's work)He firmly believed in his cause, and that he would triumph in the end. That is what kept him going through the long, hard time he spent in prison, and explains why he emerged not as a bitter, but a forgiving man.
Tragically as you say Mr. Cobain took his own life as a young man.I don't really know much about him,but can only assume that his life lacked the calling and vision which might have saved him from such an end.

Some people have more determination than others. Nelson Mandela was a very strong willed person. He was prepared to fight for what he believes in and he was willing to risk his life for it. He was a very strong person.
Kurt Cobain was involved with drugs and he brought on a lot of his problems himself. Suicide is an act of cowardliness.
Things like drugs and pressure can make a person feel and act differently if they cannot handle it. Nelson's pressure was far greater than Kurt's but Nelson Mandela knew the meaning of his life and what his purpose was.
We should all aspire to be like Nelson Mandela who is a strong willed person and not aspire to be like Kurt Cobain who was a coward.

Did Kurt Cobain take his life, or was he killed? Didn't Nelson Mandela's wife wait 27 years for him and then he left her?

Will power, self esteem, to understand and believe that God gave us the very breath we breath and that it is our right of passage, to make it through each and every day, no matter what... if we are weak or our view of this knowledge is obstructed by drugs, alchohal or just simply a lack of any good moral conversation in our life... than we could be deterred from moving on with each new day, and leaving a better world because of it.
