Most people use a DVD "ripping" program to extract content from the DVDs of the show.

Do a web search on "DVD Decrypter" to find one of the more popular programs for doing that.

I just make amvs for fun and for myself. I don't know how to professionally do it. But I download anime episodes from ares, or limewire, or realitylapse.com. Then use some kind of movie maker or something to add the music, and take parts out of the episode
