The answer, without a doubt is the chicken, whether you believe in creation or evolution.

A supreme being would not create an egg as the first chicken. It would not be kept warm prior to hatching and could not feed itself and would die.

An egg could not have formed by way of evolution, but theoretically, something else could have evolved into a chicken, which then laid eggs.

(A funny thing about evolution is you have to also accept that a male and female of each species evolved at the exact same rate to have been able to further their kind.)

It's a simple question and nowhere near the paradox that simple minds fancy it to be.

According to the theory of evolution, the first modern chicken was the offspring of the last direct ancestor of domestic chickens to not share that classification (likely the Red Junglefowl). Therefore, a non-chicken did, in fact, lay the first chicken egg, i.e., the egg came first.

I say the chicken because what or who is going to make an egg to make a chicken.

The chicken. If there was even a chance of the egg coming first, where did it come from. It couldn't possibly be the egg.

A Chicken and an Egg were lying in bed.

The Chicken leans back against the headboard with a satisfied look on his face smoking a cigar,

The Egg grabs the covers and rolls over with a disappointed look and says;

Well I guess we answered that question!!

The egg, of course. There were eggs around long before there were chickens...oh they weren't chicken eggs, but you didn't specify they had to be.

The egg. Since you never said what kind of egg, the egg came first. (Ex: There were dinosaur eggs before chickens.)
