Mame is a FUN show, it's a little....dated...but it's sooooo much fun to perform in, lots of great production numbers and it's really a sweet story.
Little Patrick Dennis' mother dies so he goes to live with his Auntie Mame on Beekman Pl (a posh NYC address) with his cooky nanny Agnes Gooch. Mame is a rebellious, fun-loving woman, and at some points she is the child and Patrick is the parent. Rent the movie with Lucille Ball if you want to get the scope of the music. It's great as well, but the Rosalind Russell movie is better (it's not the musical though) The play starts during the rage of flappers and prohibition, goes through the stock market crash, and into the forties as Patrick gets older.
If you want to audition for the role of Mame and have the voice, I suggest "Children Will Listen" from Into the Woods....it evokes the mood of "If He Walked Into My Life" which I think is her most important song in the show.

Rent the movie, "Auntie Mame" with Rosalind Russell.
It's about a very free spirited aunt who influences her
sister's young son to break out of his conservative family's
mold. She tries to loosen her nephew up and show him
that "life's a banquet, and most poor souls are starving to
death". One of the best plays ever written. You should
have a wonderful time with this one. While you're at it,
rent the film, "Margory Morningstar" with Gene Kelly
and Natalie Wood. All about a summer theatre camp.
Classic.

Those two answers above me said it all.

And yet .... there is a book (a novel) that the story is based on as well that's a fun read and quite enjoyable.
