Why is it that when we are humming and then we plug our nose, our humming stops?

When you hum, the air comes out your nose. Blocking your nose stops the hum.

If you hummed with your mouth open, it would still make noise, even if you plugged your nose.

When you hum (or yawn, or breathe through your nose), it raises your soft palate, and then the humming is the air in your sinus cavities vibrating, and the sound comes out your nose, not your mouth, becaues the sinuses are connected to the nose and not the mouth

You breathe through your nose when you hum with your mouth closed...plugging your nose stops the breathing, thereby ending the humming. Hum with your mouth open...

Because you need to breath to make any noise. If you leave your mouth open, you can still hum. Air and vibration through your vocal chords make noise.
