Democrats? lol I feel so bad because I don't know this, and I honestly did try researching it on the internet with Wikipedia; however, they had an article on "liberalism" and it was so very long. I just see a lot of questions on Yahoo addressing liberals, so I thought since i'm reading the question, I might as well know who's who. Sorry for asking something that I should probably already know, and thanks in advance for the answers! :)

Not all liberals are Democrats, but most are. Being liberal
means you believe that people have the right to live the
life style that is best for them. Without a law to tell them what
they can or cannot do.
For instance - if a gay couple wants to marry, that should up to
them. If the marriage doesn't work out, they can suffer the
consequences of divorce, the same as a straight couple.

The same for abortion - every woman should be able to
decide what is best for her, according to her beliefs -
& not have to abide by the decision made by a group of men.

Being liberal usually means that you are in favor of new
scientific research, without being hindered by religion,
even thou, most liberals are Christians, contradicting what
you might hear from Fox news.

Rosie-fat blob retarded moonbat-that's what Neil Boortz stated as her. Yahoo solutions has the liberal theory police on it in tension-in case you look at a number of my questions, some have did no longer make it to the board. Questions like while politicans use the term "low-fee housing" isn't it ridiculous? or What could take place if Iran sank one among our naval vessels? or Will the Whitewater scandal come back into play for the period of Hillary's election marketing campaign? The Yahoo theory police elect us to be good and obident liberal scum.

It depends on your definition of liberal. By the textbook definition, a liberal is anyone who supports democracy over autocracy-- in that sense, both parties are liberals. But in conventional American politics, liberals are those who look to government to fix things-- welfare, social security, price controls, and behavioral controls are examples. They also tend to like to spend money the government doesn't have (debt). Conservatives want to let the market have its way-- "Live Free or Die" is the motto of my home state. They also like a balanced budget so the overhead of the government doesn't harm the economy.

The irony is that when you get down to their positions, both parties are stuck in the center. Both like to spend money. Under Bush, the country has taken on more debt than under all previous presidents combined. Both want to restrict your freedom, whether by banning guns or flag burning, abortion or school prayer. And both half-heartedly want the government to fix things, though which things vary by party.

It's no wonder that when you talk to people with strong feelings about politics, both conservatives and liberals are disgusted with both parties.

There are liberals and conservatives in both political parties. It is better to think of the theory. Liberals are more concerned about keeping the government out of personal lives and feel that governmental control and redistribution of assets is fair. Conservatives are just the opposite. They want the government out of our pockets and don't mind a few controls on personal liberties in order to protect everyone.

After they took over the Liberals adopted the Democrat party as their own because they wanted to look like they are for the "little" guy.

It's not a requirement, but most of the time democrats are more liberal than conservative, and most liberals associate themselves with the democratic party

I think that we should really go back to a much simpler form of government, where it was simply just republican or democrat and you knew what you were getting yourself into without all these acts or petitions or articles or whatever crap the government has made to further distance itself from the general economy.
really, I think I'm just an opinionated hippie who thinks that everyone could very easily get along and make everyone happy if we all just tried a little.

You are right to be confused - usually libs are dems and cons are repubs however....there are some very conservative dems and some fairly liberal repubs. Also, I am a liberal but I think that part of being liberal is that the government should not tell me that I can't have a gun, so gun rights seem like it should be a liberal issue but instead it is a conservative issue. Conservatives say they want less government but they want government to be in charge of my womb so how does that fit in??

Unfortunately, the Democratic Party has been traditionally run by liberals, and during recent years, the socialists are in control.

Yes, most of them are. However there are some moderate Repubs like Chuck Hegel who could be classified as liberals.
