If a car can go further on a tank of gas going 40 mph than it can at 60 mph..

Why do you get better gas mileage on the highway and not in town?

I have been told that 40 mph is the optimal speed for a car as far as fuel efficiency goes, but I don't know of any tests that back that up.
Cars will get better gas mileage on the highway over the city because you are traveling a constant cruising speed rather than stopping and starting again as you would in the city.

First blond comedian tale i've got heard definitely, yet i don't likely think of it is the funniest. My little blond comedian tale: 3 women human beings, a blonde, brunette, and a purple head bump into a math issue written on the whiteboard. It reads: 5x - 3 = 4x the brunette solves the issue by subtracting 4x, and including 3. the effect is 3. The purple head first subtracts the 5x from the two factors, then provides 4. Realizes she's extra too plenty, subtracts 2, provides 4 lower back, then comes up with a similar answer. The blond sleeps with the maths instructor.

Because it is a constant speed. when you are in town (the city) there is stop-go traffic...you aren't really averaging 40 mph for a substantial length of time as you are on the highway.

Because in town its all stop and go driving. Everytime you restart you have to accelerate and that burns a lot of gasoline. On the highway, a low constant speed requires no acceleration.

Because of all the starting and stopping you usually do in a town. Getting the car going again is what uses the gas.

Not a dumb question at all. . .

Because you keep slowing down and speeding up in town. Braking consumes fuel. Accelerating consumes fuel. When you move at a constant speed on the highway, inertia reduces the gas needed to maintain your speed.

less stopping and accelerating on the highway and more in the town. because stopping and accelerating a lot burns more gas.

Because in town, you have stops and starts which use up the most gas.

That question ain't dumb in the slightest. See, you spend a lot more time at intersections and the like in a city, and that sucks the tank dry just as fast as racing all-out.

Because the Stop and Go is what sucks up all the gas.
