You take the atomic mass of the element, in this case 16, and subtract the atomic number, in this case 8, and you get the number of neutrons, in this case 8.

Subtract the atomic number (protons) from the mass (protons plus neutrons).

For oxygen: 16 - 8 = 8 neutrons
