I'm just wondering who the first woman to be recorded on records was, on the old phonograph records. I'm imagining it would be on those old, really old, cylinders that were first used. Anybody know?

I don't know if she was actually the first woman to be recorded but Corrine Morgan had the first number one record to feature a female vocal in 1904. It was called "Toyland" and she sang along with the Haydn Quartet.

Two years later Miss Morgan had another #1 hit in "So Long, Mary" That song would be the first number one song by a female as a solo artist.

The most popular female artist of the pre-1920 era was Ada Jones. Along with her solo recordings, she was known for her top ten duets with Billy Murray and Len Spencer.

You can ordered cds with the orginal recordings of music as far back as the 1890's from "Archephone Records" I have quite a few and they're quite interesting to listen if you're interested in the history of early recorded popular music.

If you think Dusty and Aretha wouldn't get contracts today you aren't paying attention. I have never seen any of these modern British female 'soul' singers that get trotted out every year or so on the pole. Think Adele, Duffy, etc... ---------- Adele, Duffy, and the like are pop stars but that's a different matter. When have there ever been huge top 40 pop stars in the vein you mean who actually were overweight or unattractive? Off the top of my head, all I got is Mama Cass for the former and Janis Joplin for the latter. But who else? It's not like Dusty and Aretha were fat ugly cows. Looks/sex appeal and pop hits have gone hand in hand for quite a while now. Basically I think your question could just as easily have been asked at any time in the last 50 years (come to think of it, it was given my parents remarks about Madonna and god knows what my parents parents thought of people like Marianne Faithful).
