To be honest with you just have to go with the lesser evil. Most of the black people I know vote democratic b/c they can more relate with our issues. On the other hand, I don't like some of the ways that they do, like welfare and all that I think that should be reserved for dire needs not b/c a person just doesn't want to go to work and I really don't like all the taxes either, but most wealthy black people vote republican. Most people republicans are rich or atleast middle class and mostly white so alot of people associate the republican party with white people. But as far as which is the best I think that would be a personal preference being a middle class black man I feel like republicans don't try to appeal to the less fortunate especially blacks.

23 answers and not one gives the correct answer!

African Americans generally vote democratic because the democrats are the ones who allowed African Americans to become enfranchised - that is, allowed them to vote.

Presidents Kennedy and Johnson overturned about 100 years of disenfranchisement in the South with the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act in the early 60s. As a result, American blacks have largely voted for the Democratic Party ever since.

Conversely, Southern whites fled the Democratic Party for the Republican Party in opposition to the empowering of Blacks. The Republican Party was despised in the South because President Lincoln, a republican, had outlawed slavery. In the 60s, when the democrats instituted civil rights reforms, the whites fled to the party opposing the reforms, the republicans.

When President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, he is reported to have said: "I fear we have lost the South for a generation." He realized white Southerners would leave the Democratic party, but signed anyways!

I wonder how many people realize that the strength of the republicans in the South is due to their opposition to civil rights and voting rights for African Americans? Judging form the answers above, not many!

Who you vote for is your affair. Please research the party positions and vote according to your own convictions!

The two what, Blacks ? Just kidding ! The Blacks have voted as a block for more voice in the system. it has worked reasonably well for them, at times ! I believe this practice is fading as Blacks become more independent, even amongst their own ethnic group !

I believe that Old Winston's theory applies to Black's too ! That is: "When you're twenty years old and not a liberal, you have no heart ! When you're forty years old and not a conservative, you have no brain !"

A couple generations ago, the Republicans launched their "Southern Strategy" to dominate presidential politics in the South. The main focus of this strategy was to play on the fears of white southerners . . . basically telling them that "if you don't vote Republican, evil black people will get you!"

I'm sure a bunch of Republicans will give "thumbs down" to my answer, but this strategy is very well documented. See the link below.

Not surprisingly, African Americans are more than a little bit offended by this bigoted strategy.

It is because the GOP is racist. I am white and am not an American. I can see the GOPs racism from afar, as can many people in many countries around the world. Only the GOP's supporters do not want to see the racism they are supporting. Condoleeza Rice being in there does not make the GOP any less racist. There were Jews who worked with the Nazis. Also, many black Americans are poor. The GOP is not interested in the poor. Again, people all over the world can see this but not the GOP's supporters.
