is it possible to convert my network card to a usb-in? i know it's possible to buy something that plugs into usb on one end and has an outlet for your network cables on the other (cat-5 ?)

my problem is my usb is fried on my laptop motherboard.

No sorry.....There is no ethernet port to USB connection device out there.

Not really the only way you could do it using network is to attach your usb device to another network computer. You can if you have a PCMCIA slot buy a PCMCIA USB card.
