Napoleon was an artillery officer. He came to prominence by figuring how to take a Royalist city which was being supplied by sea (La Rochelle). That got him named a general in the Revolutionnary army and sent off to fight in Italy.
In Italy he looted several towns (the Republic was broke and thus was grateful). He became famous and was recalled to Paris.
In Paris he used cannon to anihilate an anti-Revolutionnary demonstration. More good points and the nomination for Consul
