because it makes them feel better.
they get their frustration out and some think that being an ****** means they can get what they want.
AND others think that it truly is your fault. or that yelling at you might make a difference.

A lot of people have problems admitting when they are wrong. I guess that is one reason for the old saying, "the customer is always right." Years ago when I was in retail I made a game out if it....the uglier the customer was, the nicer and calmer (but firm, according to store policy) I acted. Most people will start behaving once they are 'killed' with kindness. Working with the public is not an easy job...good luck!

I also work with the public and have found that if they can blame you, then it makes them look better, people like this love to find fault with others, boosts their egos.
Makes me mad as hell as "the customer is always right", policy keeps me from telling them where to go! lol

where do you work? I work at cvs and just got off a 7 hour shift and I hate it when the customers mess up and blame it on you. This one lady handed me pictures at the register and I rung them up. When I was all finished ringing up she goes "Oh no I'm dropping off. duh.Staple this together ,walk to the left and drop it in that grey box. do you know how to do that?" . I knew how to do it, I just don't know asshole language.haha. She was talking to me like I was a two year old. People are ridiculous.

Yes but you can't ,however I do understand. They do it because they feel powerless and scared. They are full of adrenaline and pumped up. You just have to stay calm and let them burn it out. Usually they realize what colossal dinguses they are being and stop.

I have a theory that everyone should be required to work in retail for one solid year. Wouldn't that make everyone at least a little more compassionate?

Don't slap them, it leaves your handprint on their face, and there might be a video camera close by.
