you need to add the two equations together, and eliminate one variable from the equation, so you can solve for the other variable. to eliminate the variable, you need to make one the negative of the other. in this case, you can just multiply the second equation by -1:

5x - 3y = 8
-5x + 3y = -8

now add the two equations together:

...4x - 3y = 2
+ -5x - 3y = -8
___________
-x = -6
x = 6

now we know x = 6, so we can plug that into the original equation and solve for y:

4(6) - 3y = 2
24 - 3y = 2
-3y = -22
y = 22/3

now if you want to check to see if your answers are right, just plug in x and y into both equations:

4(6) - 3(22/3) = 2
24 - 22 = 2
2 = 2

5(6) - 3(22/3) = 8
30 - 22 = 8
8 = 8

Ok. Is that really the whole question? The question did not have anything that had (let x=(what ever number) or let y=(what ever number). Well it really depends how you want to solve it. You can either solve for Y or X. If you solve for Y then you would have to let X be some number, for example ill make it x=1.
So then you would have
4(1)-3y=2
4-3y=2
3y=4-2
y=(4-2)/3
y=2/3

So now if you were solving for X then you make Y=(what ever number is given to you), but for this example ill make Y=2
So now you would have
4x-3(2)=2
4x-6=2
4x=2+6
4x=8
x=8/4
x=2

so then now you have your X and Y. So I solved the equation for 4x-3y=2 when Y=2 and X=1. Solve for x and y.
and the answer would be (2,2/3)

I am not sure this answer is what you wanted but I thought I would just throw this out there.

4x - 3y = 2- - - - - Equation 1
5x - 3y = 8- - - - -Equation 2
- - - - - - - -

Multiply equation 1 by - 1

4x - 3y = 2

- 1(4x) - (- 1)(3y) = - 1(2)

- 4x - ( - 3y) = - 2

- 4x + 3y = - 2

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

- 4x + 3y = - 2
5x - 3y = 8
- - - - - - - - -
x = 6

insert the x value into equation 1

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

4x - 3y = 2

4(6) - 3y = 2

24 - 3y = 2

24 - 3y - 24 = 2 - 24

- 3y = - 22

- 3y / 3 = - 22 / - 3

y = - 22 / - 3

y = 22/3

Insert the y value into equation 1

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Check for equation 1

4x - 3y = 2

4(6) - 3(22/3) = 2

24 - 66/3 = 2

24- 22 = 2

2 = 2

- - - - - -

Check for equation 2

5x - 3y = 8

5(6) - 3(22/3) = 8

30 - 66/3 = 8

30 - 22 = 8

8 = 8

- - - - - - - -

Both equations balance

The solution set is { 6, 22/3 }

4x - 3y = 2................Eq 1
5x - 3y = 8................Eq 2

Combine Eq 1 with Eq 2 by Subtraction

x = 6
Substitute in Eq 1

4 x 6 - 3y = 2

Rearrange

3y = 22

y = (22/3)
y = 7.3333
