it is not going to be discontinued, you just won't be able to buy all versions brand new. I beleive XP Pro will continue for another 2 years before stopping. And if you'd like one of the other versions you can still get them preinstalled on new computers or you can get OEM versions or buy second hand, XP Pro is as low as £25 on Amazon.co.uk

After 2007, Product Activation will be stopped on XP Pro, meaning you can reinstall it or buy it without activating. Updates will continue just as there are still updates for older versions of Windows(although very few and very rarely)

Windows XP will only be discontinued in the sense that you can't buy it anymore. Microsoft is already planning for Windows XP Service Pack 3 in 2008, along with Vista Service Pack 2. XP will run for a long time still, it was 2005 when the last upgrade for Windows 98 was released.

Don't worry, Microsoft have only just discontinued support for Windows 98, XP will be around and supported for a long time yet, please don't go out and buy Vista until they have at least brought out their second edition as the current one is genuinely full of glitches. I can't actually believe they released it with many fundamental mistakes as I have used it and it truly is as bad as everyone has said. I was going to get it myself until I saw how bad it is. So many people have complained about it that they really will need to fix that before stopping XP. And as I say, regardless of whether Vista is here or not it is brand new and XP will be usable and updatable until at least 2010.

Microsoft are not going to scrap support for XP for some considerable time yet. Vista has not been the success that they had hoped for and it will be a while before it is. Linux is becoming more popular and Microsoft are well aware of that fact. They certainly will not want to push even more people into adopting Linux by stopping support for XP. Don't worry about it, chances are that you will be looking for a new PC before XP support is stopped and that will come with Vista installed. Hopefully by then they will have sorted it out.

Support for Microsoft Operating Systems last for a long time. Windows XP probably be supported till at least 3rd Quarter 2009 or Early 2010. Espicially XP pro as lots of business's still use it. There is a Service Pack due for XP for start of 2008.

But buying it will start getting difficult from end of this year probably. Exc 2nd hand market.

XP will be around for a long while. I know people who are still running Windows 2000 and are still able to get the updates. I will not be switching to Vista either. I have heard nothing but bad things about it.

Microsoft has the nerve to market Vista as faster, yet they conveniently forget to mention that it requires a lot of power i.e. RAM to run.

Someone I know mentioned how fast Bill Gates was going through the applications, during a news broadcast. I merely pointed out that he obviously had the highest spec computer available.

As for the discontinuation of XP, check this link out:

Windows Xp will be redrawn from the market in 2008 but it doesn't mean it won't be supported anymore. Updates for it will still be available until 2010, so there's nothing to worry about until then.
Unfortunately this doesn't mean that all manufacturers out there, even software developers will support Xp until 2010.

My understanding is that XP will continue to be made available for the next year, Adan Microsoft will continue to support XP for the next 2 years. I would strongly advise against upgrading to vista for a while. There are still a number of driver and compatibility issues being worked out.

Relax and enjoy XP, it will be around until 2012 based on info posted on Microsoft's web site.

Full support is scheduled to end in 2008, but M$ may extend it as they did with 98 and ME.

When you decide to buy a new PC, Vista will likely be your only option.
